An artist almost as recognisable as the work he created.
This portrait of Salvador Dalí leans into the eccentricity and theatricality that became inseparable from his public persona. His unmistakable expression and famous moustache make him an immediately recognisable subject, while bold colour and graphic marks give the portrait an energy of its own.
Rather than trying to recreate Dalí's surrealist imagery, I wanted the focus to remain on the artist himself: the deliberately constructed character behind one of the most distinctive bodies of work in modern art.
At 100 × 100 cm, the portrait has significant presence, with the black floating frame giving the colourful composition a strong, clean finish.
