Subtle, he is not.
This male mandrill immediately caught my attention for his extraordinary colour and wonderfully comical expression. Brilliant reds and blues dominate the face, surrounded by highly textured fur and an open-mouthed expression that gives the portrait plenty of personality.
Mandrills are the world's largest monkeys and are naturally among the most colourful mammals. I’ve pushed that visual impact a little further with touches of metallic gold paint, which catch and shift with the light as the work is viewed from different angles.
Painted on birch board, Mandrill is a compact wildlife portrait that packs considerably more attitude than its 40 × 40 cm dimensions might suggest.
