The betta fish (or Siamese fighting fish) is a popular spiritual totem animal for those looking for a new beginning and perfectly reflects my new beginnings in Queensland in 2023 after a disruptive 2022. The betta fish is often seen as a symbol of hope, luck, and strength. If you have a betta fish as your animal totem, you will likely be very spiritually in tune. However, you’re also likely to be a natural leader and have a strong sense of intuition.

If you’re feeling lost or stuck in a rut, the betta fish reminds you that it’s never too late to start anew. No matter how dark and cold things may seem, there’s always hope for something better just around the corner.

Betta fish are also associated with good luck. If you’re hoping to attract good fortune, consider keeping a betta fish as a pet or placing one in your home. The betta fish’s bright colours and fun personality will surely bring some extra luck and prosperity into your life!

I have shown the fish floating in space around my head because, in addition to the symbolism above, they are associated with the air element (as opposed to water as one might assume, being fish).  In addition to having gills like other fish, bettas have specialized organs called labyrinth organs. By jumping out of the water or simply sticking their head out at the surface, they can breathe air with the labyrinth organs, which are like lungs.

The woman in the painting is actually a self-portrait. I chose to use myself as the subject as an extra challenge as I am hoping to push my human portrait capabilities in 2023 so watch this space for more (although not necessarily of me!). I actually don't enjoy water but I appreciate the movement and the colours of Siamese fighting fish so it was very convenient that they are actually associated with air. Because the males are so aggressive with each other there is also an element of turmoil in this composition, with fins swirling in space around the head which does reflect some of my headspaces with the changes in my life already in 2023.

She is a stand-out statement piece that will look amazing against a light or dark wall. It could suit a variety of locations inside a home but may be particularly appropriate for a beauty salon or hairdresser. The mica on the fish scales and the metallic gold paint on her skin shimmer depending on the viewing angle.

The small pieces around her are also available - see listings for "Salon Series". They are also original pieces but much smaller (on paper).

Please be advised colours may appear differently on different devices.

This is an original acrylic painting (acrylic, and Posca marker), 92cm x 122cm x 3.8cm, framed in natural Tasmanian Oak (94cm x 124cm x 5cm framed dimensions - see the second image) & ready to hang.
