Even one of the greatest minds in modern science deserved an ice cream.
Happy Hawking is my playful portrait of physicist Stephen Hawking, capturing him deep in thought while enjoying a considerably less complicated pleasure.
I liked the contrast between a man associated with extraordinarily complex ideas about the universe and such an ordinary, recognisable moment. The result is affectionate rather than serious: a portrait of an icon that focuses on the person as much as his intellect.
Painted in acrylic and Posca marker, the work combines detailed portraiture with bright colour and a little humour.
At 40 × 40 cm, Happy Hawking is one of my smaller framed originals and an easy piece to place for someone who likes their art with personality.
