Zen Monkey - Red Shanked Douc

It was the extraordinary stillness of this red-shanked douc that first caught my attention.

With its eyes closed and brilliantly coloured face framed by soft grey fur, the pose feels almost meditative. Zen Monkey focuses on that moment of calm while celebrating one of the world's most striking primates.

Red-shanked doucs are native to Southeast Asia and are critically endangered, so the painting also reflects my ongoing interest in using wildlife portraiture to draw attention to species under threat.

Painted on birch board, the smooth surface lends itself beautifully to the detail and colour of the animal's face and fur.
