There is something remarkably human about the gaze of an orangutan.

Old Man Of The Forest is an intimate portrait that focuses on the animal's expression, texture and extraordinary presence. Warm tones move through the long hair while the face emerges from the darker background, drawing attention directly to the eyes.

Painted on birch board rather than canvas, the smooth surface allowed for plenty of detail through the face and fur while retaining the expressive quality of the paint.

At 40 × 40 cm, it's a compact original with plenty of character and an easy size to place.
