There’s something wonderfully unruly about a Highland cow, and Highlander captures one in a particularly unguarded moment.
A shaggy tan coat fills the canvas, layered with unexpected flashes of magenta and blue that are echoed through the sweeping horns. Mid-lick, with drool falling from its mouth, this is not a polished portrait. It’s full of character, texture and a little bit of ridiculousness.
The combination of natural detail and expressive colour gives Highlander plenty of presence at 102 × 76 cm, while the subject brings a sense of humour that makes it an easy piece to live with.
