My interpretation of one of my favourite artists, Frida Kahlo, surrounded by two Mexican spider monkeys and lush contemporary foliage.
The composition deliberately nods to the visual language of Kahlo's self-portraits, where animals and plants frequently surrounded the artist, but I've interpreted those elements through my own use of colour and portraiture. The result is vibrant, decorative and a little playful rather than an attempt to replicate her work.
Rich tropical colours surround Frida's unmistakable face, while the two monkeys emerge through the foliage on either side. A silver and black floating frame provides a crisp contrast to the colour within the painting.
At 51 × 61 cm, Frida has plenty of personality without requiring the wall space of one of my larger statement works.
