Elvis the Gang-gang Cockatoo (Reproduction Print)

"Elvis" is the fourth of a series of seven Australian birds "Flummoxed Flock". This piece was drawn with permission from a reference photo of a gang gang cockatoo by Paula Bowler (www.instagram.com/paulabowler4).

The Gang-gang Cockatoo can be seen throughout many parts of south-eastern Australia. In the summer months, they are mostly found at higher elevations, where they breed in tree hollows in the moist eucalyptus forests of the mountainous Great Divide. After breeding has finished, and the days grow cooler and shorter, they undertake altitudinal movements, leaving the mountains and flying to lower elevations to spend the autumn and winter, when they are ubiquitous in suburban gardens of lowland towns and cities.

Gang-gang Cockatoos feed mainly on seeds of native and introduced trees and shrubs, with a preference for eucalypts, wattles and introduced hawthorns. They will also eat berries, fruits, nuts, insects and their larvae. They are mainly arboreal (found in trees), coming to the ground only to drink and forage among fallen fruits or pine cones. Gang-gangs feed in flocks of up to 60 birds outside the breeding season; they feed in pairs or small family groups during the breeding season.

The bird is the focus of this large painting and depicts him peering curiously at the viewer. His marvellous feathers are accented with metallic gold paint which pops from different angles. There are so many colours in this piece and due to its striking size, deserves a place of prime attention, however as you can see from the insitu scenes, it could suit a lounge, living room or bedroom. Wherever it resides, it will draw attention and conversation.

The original piece has more contrast and was photographed without varnish and in not ideal lighting situations and there is glare on these images. Please be advised colours may also differ depending on the device you are viewing this from.
